I’d like to thank all of those who already know the value of grassroots organizing and campaign fundraising.
It wasn’t until I retired from the United States Navy and decided to pursue politics that I learned the true “spirit” in the meaning of the term GRASSROOTS! I’d like to share with you first the definition as defined in Webster’s Dictionary, but I’d also like to share what the definition is based upon my very humble beginnings.
One of the questions I’ve asked myself and others since being old enough to contemplate politics is:
“Why do we vote for people who we don’t know anything about, other than that they don’t look like us nor do they LIVE like us?”
I now have my own theories of how significant and relevant my question is, especially in terms of socioeconomic levels and “educational” poverty. As a Democrat (especially a progressive), I believe in the progress of ALL Americans…meaning there must be some EQUITY shared with those less fortunate in order for them to have the same actual opportunities as those who have more resources. Grassroots efforts basically share those thoughts.
My campaign pledge says it all:
1. I will not accept corporate PAC money as a matter of quid pro quo, meaning I will not have any promises to keep other than to the Americans in the district where I will serve. This MATTERS!!! It is more likely than not that anyone accepting large amounts of money from corporations as a means of persuading you that their financial prowess and POWER is to acutally do what is in your best interests is probably enslaved to the corporate promise and using you for a vote to enhance that promise. (Corporate Payback is a proper analogy). On the contrary, if I am receiving dollars from people who can barely afford to pay them, but do so with the belief that I am a decent HUMAN BEING who will vote on legislation to better their situation because it is what is right and not for any other reason…my conscience would ensure my power is in fact, THE POWER of the PEOPLE!
2. I will fight without wavering for a single-payer system of healthcare for ALL Americans…EVEN for CONGRESS! It is time we alleviate elitist thinking and decision-making from our government and make it a truly effective system designed by the people and FOR the people!
3. Young people should not be so in debt coming out of college that they can’t find a job to help them reach the promise of purpose and prosperity education provides. The term “affordable” means different things to different people; but I believe offering a tuition-free collegiate experience will help provide the equity needed by those less fortunate and to those who work hard each day but are unable to thrive in an economy that only works for the wealthy!
4. Mass incarceration is nothing more than making money off filling prisons with those most vulnerable to our unjust legal system. Our criminal justice system must be taken out of the hands of the evil and placed into the hearts and minds of those who are willing and eager to make America true to her promise of One nation under God with LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL!
